Touti Strategy: How to Win

Touti isn't just luck: the bid, the choice of trump and coordination with your partner make the difference. Here are the essential strategies to win more often at Touti.

Bid well

The bid is the most important decision in Touti. Assess your hand before you call: count your high cards (Aces and 3s), your long suits and your potential trumps. Only bid if you can reasonably make your contract — a failed bid loses all the points you staked. When in doubt, pass rather than overbid.

Choose and manage trump

If you win the bid, pick your longest and strongest suit as trump, not just the one where you hold the Ace. A 4- or 5-card suit is often better than a short suit with big cards. Then keep your trumps to cut tricks rich in the opponents’ points instead of wasting them early.

Count the cards

The best players track the cards played. Watch the Aces and 3s above all (11 and 10 points): until they fall, stay careful. Also count the trumps played to know whether the opponents still hold any. This memory tells you when to drop your points safely and when a trick is yours.

Play with your partner

Touti is won as a pair. Never cut a trick your partner is already winning: drop your points on it instead. When your partner leads, “load” the trick with your high cards (Ace, 3, Rey). The way you play is a signal: the card you play or the suit you discard passes information.

Manage your points

Never throw an Ace or a 3 into a trick the opponent will win. If you can’t take the trick and your partner isn’t winning it, discard a worthless card (2, 4, 5, 6, 7). Keep your point cards for your side’s tricks, and don’t forget the 10-point last-trick bonus — it often swings the round.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Overbidding on an average hand: a missed contract costs more than a passed turn.
  • Cutting your own partner’s trick.
  • Wasting your trumps too early, with nothing left to cut later.
  • Throwing your Aces and 3s into already-lost tricks.
